Oral diseases are as old as man. Already in the first civilizations, somewhat rudimentary solutions were sought and found to alleviate the pain produced by dental diseases. There is evidence that the Egyptians carried out dental treatments using wires to stabilize jaw fractures or to tie up lost teeth and as a method of sterilization they used fire.

La odontología en el S.XXI: ¡Cómo hemos cambiado!

They certainly did not lack ingenuity, even for practising cosmetic dentistry as they decorated their teeth by inlaying precious stones into the enamel. Later, the Etruscans and the Phoenicians used gold bands and wires for the construction of dental prostheses. They placed the extracted teeth on the bands and held them in the mouth with the wires.

Many years later, barbers took over, and in their barber shops, they performed dental extractions and other procedures while shaving or cutting the hair of their masters. I wonder if the ladies also went to these places…

Pharmacists were responsible for prescribing herbal remedies for toothache, nor was there any preventive care. The treatment in those days was basically to extract the sick tooth. In fact when George Washington became the first president of the USA in 1789, he only had one natural tooth in his mouth.

Fortunately dentistry has undergone such an evolution that it is at least astounding what we can achieve today thanks to technology and of course the whole history of medicine.

Today, the passage through the dentist is pleasant, dentistry has been humanized to such an extent that the patient participates in the design of his own smile. There is an awareness of prevention, digital diagnosis, invisible orthodontics, conscious sedation, immediate implantology and, bearing in mind that the materials used are of the highest quality as well as being biocompatible with the organism, we are talking about living in an era of excellence in the world of dentistry.

salud-dental-infantil-importancia.jpg

When we think of children, we always see a smile with spaces and irregularities. Children’s dental health starts from the moment their new teeth appear. Also when they are given their first lessons in dental education.

The importance of their dental health, makes the parents of the child mainly responsible. We are going to inform you about some data, of the concern and habits of the parents in their children.

¿Importa la salud dental infantil?

Do they care about their health?

I am sure that all parents care about their children’s health. But, regarding children’s dental health, there are other facts. For example, the frequency of visits to the dentist’s office is low and is not done from an early age.

Surveys indicate that only 13 percent of parents with minor children brought their child in before the age of one. Only one visit to the dentist is made because of a complaint from the child or because of a type of illness.

The World Dental Federation study reveals, that even if you don’t visit the dentist often, there is a concern about oral hygiene. The education established in the parents, is transferred in a positive way. Supervising the brushing of their children and even limiting the consumption of sugary products to avoid cavities indicates that children’s dental health is in order.

Maintaining this habit

Once education is instilled in the parents, they will have to maintain and teach the new children of this world, to establish good health habits. This includes daily toothbrushing, not being afraid to visit the dentist and avoiding personal check-ups on their oral health.

We recommend you

At Alvarado Dental Clinic, we encourage you to take care of your mouth and your children’s mouth, since good general health is linked to good oral health. Protect your mouth and your body.

combatir-caries.jpg

Caries is one of the most common and yet feared diseases. It is caused by internal factors such as saliva and external factors such as diet.

We will now look at what it is, its symptoms and what the treatment consists of.

La caries, tan temida como abatible

What is a cavity?

Caries is a bacterial infection. These bacteria secrete acids that corrode the enamel and break down the tooth. If not treated in time, this acid can reach the white tissue producing painful inflammations. Bacterial plaque also adheres to the surface of the teeth, forming tartar.

The formation of this layer is inevitable but we can work on avoiding the consequences. If we brush our teeth after meals, use mouthwash and avoid sugary foods we can significantly minimise the chances of suffering from them.

How do I know if I suffer from it?

In most cases a visual inspection is enough to detect it. It usually produces black spots on the tooth. If it is not tackled, it will advance to the point of causing extreme sensitivity to cold and heat.

In any case, in the least doubt, the ideal thing is to go to the dentist, who will give us the appropriate treatment for the state of the infection.

Treatment of caries

The treatment will depend on the state you are in. If it is superficial, it will be sufficient to remove it and treat it with a composite reconstruction. Composite is a synthetic material that reinforces the enamel and hermetically seals the holes produced by caries.

If, on the other hand, the caries has reached the dental nerve, we will have to resort to endodontics. The aim here is to replace the large loss of material from the tooth so that we will have to fill the hole with composite. In the most advanced cases of the disease, the most effective thing is to resort to a dental crown.

Prevent

As we can see, if not treated in time it can cause pain and discomfort. That is why it is necessary to visit our trusted dentist at least once a year, or one visit every 6 months.

revisiones-dentales.jpg

Regular check-ups are one of the best medicines against dental problems. We grow up with the idea that it is normal to have toothache, cavities or any other abnormality. But this is totally false.

In the past, dental care was scarce so seeing oral problems and diseases was completely normal. Nowadays, it is common to maintain care but the diet has become more cariogenic. This is because we eat more times and more sugar.

Revisiones periódicas: sonríe con total tranquilidad

How often do we have to have a check-up?

If we maintain good daily dental hygiene and a healthy diet, specialists recommend a check-up at least once a year. Unfortunately, it is unusual for both conditions to be combined.

The current pace of life and the quality of the food we eat mean that experts are recommending a six-monthly visit. Brushing our teeth after every meal, flossing and sugary products are conditions that we cannot always meet.

With two annual check-ups and some basic routines the chances of having oral problems drop considerably. Problems such as caries, gum disease or bruxism, among many others, are less likely to affect us.

What does a check-up consist of?

Regular check-ups with our dentist will begin with an examination of the teeth, gums and the entire oral cavity. After this, he will make a comparison with the result of the previous visit to check whether we have suffered any alteration that could pose a problem.

If a problem is found, you may ask us for dental x-rays to correctly diagnose any anomaly you may find. With these simple guidelines and regular check-ups we will manage to maintain excellent oral health.

Check your smile

We will be grateful to meet you and get to know your mouth. Consult us and contact us without any obligation.

estres-salud-dental.jpg

Stress is one of the conditions that currently afflict most people. To a greater or lesser extent, all areas of health are affected, therefore dental health is also affected.

However, the worst consequence of the various effects of stress on dental health occurs with time, as a tooth can be worn down by up to 30% of its original size and due to this, the nerve can be exposed and cause real problems of sensitivity and pain.

Consecuencias del estrés en la salud dental

The consequences of stress

Our experience tells us that the most common problems due to stress situations are the following:

Gingivitis. When a person is stressed, they usually pay less attention to their daily hygiene. Therefore, the accumulation of residues in the gums leads to problems of inflammation.
Periodontitis. The stress hormone, cortisol, can generate inflammation, which leads to periodontal diseases.
Bruxism. The unconscious clenching of teeth causes pain in the chewing muscles and premature wear of the teeth.
Canker sores. Wounds that form on the gums or the mucous membrane that are caused by viruses or bacteria that attack when you are under stress.

Obviously one of the fundamental pillars to fight stress is to practice relaxation exercises, psychological therapy or any other technique. However, everything is complementary and any help is good. So it is very important to go to the dentist’s office. The professional must evaluate the problems that the increase in emotional tension may have caused in the oral health. From there, and depending on the diagnosis, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be implemented.

importancia-de-cada-pieza-dental.jpg

It all starts in our mouths. The teeth play a very important role. Thanks to all the teeth we chew, cut the food and digest it so that our body is nourished. In fact, each tooth fulfils its function and can be divided into four types:

Porque cada pieza dental cuenta

  • The incisors: 8 teeth located in the central and front part of the mouth.
  • The canines: known as fangs, 4 teeth that tear the food.
  • The premolars: there are 8 of them and they help the molars to start grinding and chewing the food.
  • Molars: at the bottom of the mouth, there are 12 of them and they chew and crush the food.

Adults have a total of 32 teeth without the well-known wisdom teeth, or extra teeth, which can form in some people. After knowing in a general way the teeth that each person has. We must be aware that each one of them fulfils a function and losing one of them can have serious consequences.

What happens with the loss of a dental piece?

When a dental piece is lost, there is usually a migration of the adjacent teeth towards that free space and even movement or deterioration of the piece in front of the one that is missing. When we speak of migration, we are talking about an inclination that the rest of the teeth can suffer and that modifies the shape of the arch and consequently mastication. The effects of this change usually cause pain in the jaw and neck as well as dizziness.

In addition to these consequences, the risk of caries increases. This is due to the tendency to retain food debris, both in the resulting gaps and in the opposing teeth, as they become uncoupled and create gaps.

It is important that rapid action is taken when teeth are missing. So that they are replaced in order to avoid these risks which, in some cases, can become irreversible.

deporte-salud-dental.jpg

The Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration (SEPA) has produced a scientific report that points to the association between poor oral and periodontal health and reduced sporting performance.

Oral health influences sports performance and, in the same way, sport influences oral health.

El deporte y la salud dental

From this premise arises sports dentistry. A discipline that aims to treat diseases or oral manifestations that affect the general state of the sportsman or woman.

Dental check-ups

Based on the scientific literature, dentists and sports doctors agree on the importance of carrying out dental examinations and check-ups for all athletes who are going to start any discipline. Because perfection, excellence and high performance in any sport can only be achieved with complete health. And this of course includes oral health.

It is not only a question of curative treatments, but also of preventive actions. Such actions can prevent major ills, as is the case with mouth guards. According to specialists, these protectors reduce oral injuries to below 1% when used properly. Furthermore, it has been proven that their prolonged use can increase sports performance.

Bruxism, caries, trauma, dental erosion, occlusion problems, gingivitis and periodontitis are some of the most common diseases found in sportsmen and women of all levels. The most relevant factors causing bad dental health are usually

  • Nutritional imbalances. Such as frequent consumption of carbohydrates, isotonic and energy drinks or sweetened juices.
  • Alteration in the immune mechanisms due to dehydration. Dry mouth and intensive training.
  • Psychological changes. These cause a decrease in salivary secretion and dryness of the mouth.
  • Little knowledge of dental health.
  • Lack of preventive measures.
  • Do sport, with a healthy smile

There are many risks that an athlete can take. For example, as explained in a study published by the American Dental Association’s magazine, chlorine is a major problem for swimmers. People who train more than 6 hours a week in swimming pools can suffer from so-called “swimmer’s tartar”. This is a pathology that causes brown or yellowish spots to appear on your teeth, as well as a greater probability of developing gingivitis or periodontitis.

On the other hand, in sports such as mountain climbing or underwater activities you can suffer severe pain, due to changes in environmental pressure.

In short, it is crucial for sportsmen and women to receive special and specific dental care and above all a lot of information on the prevention of oral diseases and their sporting consequences.

elegir-tipo-de-ortodoncia.jpg

Orthodontics is a way of improving your oral health and aesthetics, in a guaranteed way. At Alvarado Dental Clinic we offer different types of orthodontics in Valencia, as your choice will depend on different factors and the needs of the patient. We will categorize the different orthodontic treatments we offer in our dental clinic through three attributes: invisibility, comfort and speed.

Elegir tipo de ortodoncia

As these attributes say, firstly, invisibility guarantees little visibility of the bracket installed. Secondly, comfort improves the orthodontic situation as some treatments can be uncomfortable due to the friction of the bracket in the mouth. And finally, speed. This attribute refers to the time required and the ease of use of the treatment.

However, and in parallel with these characteristics, the situation of each patient should be diagnosed by the orthodontist in the clinic. This professional is the one who will be able to give his or her opinion after diagnosing the patient and deciding on the type of orthodontics to be used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment?

  • Invisalign. A very comfortable treatment, with the need to change it every two weeks. Therefore, in order to achieve the desired results, the treatment will be carried out gradually. The most important attribute of Invisalign is that it is a highly aesthetic and hygienic treatment.
  • Metal braces. This is the best known treatment, although it is less comfortable. They are the most economical braces in comparison with other treatments. The only disadvantage is that the braces remain visible.
  • Aesthetic braces. The material used to make these braces is ceramic or porcelain. It has the same effectiveness as metal braces, but they are much less visible. The comfort would be the same as in the previous case.
  • Lingual. Its visibility is practically nil and its effectiveness is the same as that of other orthodontic treatments with brackets, so the results are very effective. This is a treatment that is very much in demand by patients.
  • Damon braces. As with metal and aesthetic braces, their position and visibility will depend on their material. The difference that can be perceived is the bracket that is attached to the tooth. This treatment uses a formula to guarantee greater comfort and efficiency.

We include more information in the orthodontic section of our web page, where you can consult in a more detailed way the functionality of each type of orthodontics.

vino-salud-dental.jpg

If we talk about wine, we immediately relate it to cultural celebrations, social relations and gastronomy. However, when we talk about the benefits of wine on our health, we not only relate it to a cardiovascular level, but also to oral health. A recent study indicates that a substance in this drink can improve our oral health.

Los beneficios del vino en la salud bucodental

The benefit of wine: polyphenols

The antioxidant property of polyphenols improves and prevents some diseases in the long term. Specialists recommend that we drink a glass of wine a day to improve our heart health. But its benefits include oral health, which is affected by this substance and prevents diseases that worsen oral health.

Among the properties of polyphenols, we find:

  • Red wine helps prevent diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases.
  • It increases the rate of beneficial bacteria in the intestine, which helps us to control our body weight.
  • It inhibits pathogenic bacteria, preventing them from adhering to cells. Therefore, it reduces the capacity of proliferation of bacteria such as caries.
  • They limit the inflammation caused by the presence of bacterial infections, which cause gingivitis.
  • Their antioxidant property is related to the protection of the body, increasing our immune capacity.

Thus, by consuming polyphenols, some diseases can be prevented. For example, diabetes increases the possibility of the proliferation of bacteria such as caries or periodontitis, as the level of glucose in the blood and in the saliva varies.

Therefore, the importance of polyphenols in red wine should be stressed. In contrast, in the case of white wines, researchers doubt their benefits in this respect, as their acid content could wear down the tooth enamel.

In addition, you should take into account…

It is not just a drink to see, smell or taste. It can also help you to have good oral health. However, you should not forget that it is a drink with alcohol. So it should always be consumed in moderation.
